Welcome to Your Deep Genius
Welcome to Your Deep Genius - a psychoanalytic remix for the modern world. I’m so excited you’re here.
Clinical training began my (somewhat brutal) introduction into the world of psychology, but also left me feeling somewhat confused when it came to the ‘how’ of helping my patients beyond being really empathic or following an manualised plan. I was also left feeling pretty uncertain about how I was meant to be fully myself and a therapist at the same time.
Over time, I found refuge in different aspects of the framework of psychoanalysis. Psychoanalytic theory gave me so many of the answers I was seeking, not just about what to ‘do’ in therapy, but also about what really heals, and what is actually going on when two (or more) people come together in the pursuit of healing through psychotherapy.
Psychoanalysis is not without its demons however, and it is definitely out of vogue in 2022. It was only because I happened upon the right teachers at the right time that I had the luck of being initiated into this profound and life-changing way of thinking about myself and the world. I have seen that many of our colleagues are not so lucky - some university programs only mention psychoanalysis for long enough to make fun of Sigmund Freud (the father of not only psychoanalysis, but psychotherapy itself!) and brand it as outdated (it is more relevant than ever), lacking in evidence (it isn’t) or even harmful (don’t get us started!).
Psychoanalysis has so much to offer not only therapists, but any human trying to live a fulfilling, conscious life. With YDG, I want to bring you into our ongoing exploration of how therapy works in ‘real life’. Our body of work is created to distill the extraordinary, powerful central concepts of psychoanalysis in a new way - free of the cryptic language of the early 1900s, outside the gatekeeping of institutions, and made accessible for a wide range of folks to relate to, take in and use, instead of as an invitation to glaze over and tune out, concluding along with the majority of modern psychologists that Freud and his mates were whack and belong back in the early 1900s. 😅
Sound like what you’ve been looking for? I would love for you to be a part of the YDG community. The best way to stay connected is by subscribing to my Substack - for less than the cost of a weekly coffee (and way less than the cost of literally any kind of supervision or training 🤑) you can access my writing on all things psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, being-a-therapist, and being-a-human, delivered to your inbox every week.
